Back pain affects approximately 85% of people at some point in their lives, making it a fairly normal occurrence.

What is important is to:

  • get the pain assessed by your physio, GP or a specialist
  • get your injury treated sooner rather than later
  • understand what caused the pain
  • exercise and return to every day life.

At Carmen Andrews Physiotherapy we are passionate about treating neck and back pain.

Many of our post graduate courses have been on assessing and treating neck and back pain, from various schools of thoughts – we have more tools in our tool box to approach a problem. Our approach to a back problem is not one dimensional.

Because we understand movement and the science of pain, we are best equipped to provide safe and effective relief from back pain with a long term plan to prevent recurrence. Physiotherapy is on the cutting edge of the conservative management of back pain research and rehabilitation after surgery.

There is a long list of possible causes for mechanical lower back pain, namely:

Arthritis, fascet joint sprain, muscle pain or strain, degenerative disc disease, nerve impingement, piriformis syndrome, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, sciatica, scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, poor work station set- up (ergonomics) and poor posture.

Ultimately, other than trauma, we hurt ourselves by either;

  • moving incorrectly for too long causing repetitive strain and injury,
  • OR
  • we don’t move enough allowing too much pressure on the discs and joints in the spine resulting in muscle fatigue and weakness.

A quote by Prof Lorimer Moseley who is a clinical scientist investigating pain in humans. In 2011, Lorimer was appointed Prof of Neuroscience andFoundation Chair in Physiotherapy at the University of South Australia:

  • In all the world, the person most suited to mastering your situation is YOU.
  • To get where you want to go will require a journey, not a quick fix, and you will probably need to be courageous, patient and persistent.
  • By virtue of being human you will have very effective and pervasive protective mechanisms.
  • Threats hide in difficult to spot places
  • By virtue of being human, your system will adapt to the demand s placed on it, as long as you keep finding the place between adaptation and protection.”
